Killing, The (1956)

  • Criterion Collection, Kubrick, Stanley
  • 1956, Stanley Kubrick, USA

Kubrick treats the crime-noir genre in a revolutionary non-linear storytelling way in what is one of the most effective American heist films ever made.

Night on Earth (1991)

  • Criterion Collection, Jarmusch, Jim
  • 1991, Jim Jarmusch, USA

Five uneven vignettes shot in different cities centering on conversations between cab drivers and passengersโ€”this is Jarmusch in easy-going mode as he captures the pathos of human connection.

Farewell, The (2019)

Billed as one of the yearโ€™s best pictures, and quite rightly so, as the filmโ€™s mastery of its tragicomic tone and a solid ensemble cast combine to reach both tearjerking and comedic highs.

4.5 stars

This is highly-accomplished raunchy comedy filmmaking for the modern age, and no doubt one of the best films of 2009.

Joker (2019)

What a strange and risk-taking studio movie this isโ€”a disturbingly-violent Hollywood-style if also arthouse-type character study that just about holds everything together thanks to a killer performance by Joaquin Phoenix.

Port Authority (2019)

This debut feature may be raw at times, but thereโ€™s an undeniable organic quality to the filmmaking about a young man who meets a trans woman in the New York kiki scene.

Midsommar (2019)

Ari Asterโ€™s sophomore effort may be too disturbing for the uninitiated viewer, but its strange, otherworldly quality is an experience like no other.

Hereditary (2018)

Not even Toni Colletteโ€™s arresting performance or the filmโ€™s excellent craftsmanship can save this rather uncompelling and overrated horror mystery.

Ad Astra (2019)

  • Gray, James
  • 2019, James Gray, USA

An immensely well-crafted heroโ€™s tale through space that explores existential ideas at a deliberate pace, but its final landing is not entirely convincing.

Lost City of Z, The (2016)

  • Gray, James
  • 2016, James Gray, USA

A remarkably-realized film about the great British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett, yet it is James Grayโ€™s patience with pacing that is most rewarding, with the film unfolding like a traditional biopic in the mould of an inspired tone poem on obsession and mystery.
