Mandabi (1968)

  • Criterion Collection, Sembene, Ousmane
  • 1968, Ousmane Sembene, Senegal

The first-ever film to be shot in an African language, Sembene’s landmark sophomore feature is a cultural experience to behold, and a gently comic satire about the bureaucratic hurdles a debt-ridden man has to undergo to cash in his money order.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Samaritan Zatoichi (1968)

  • Criterion Collection
  • 1968, Japan, Kenji Misumi, Zatoichi

This 19th installment is a rather straightforward if still serviceable affair, as the guilt-ridden blind swordsman protects a woman from nefarious harm.

⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Zatoichi and the Fugitives (1968)

  • Criterion Collection
  • 1968, Japan, Kimiyoshi Yasuda, Zatoichi
  • Leave a comment

This mostly decent 18th installment balances drama with sharp swordfighting action in what is a decidedly darker film in tone.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Immortal Story, The (1968)

  • Criterion Collection, Welles, Orson
  • 1968, France, Orson Welles

The story-within-a-story treatise might feel undercooked but Welles still does a lot within its short runtime, particularly creating the film’s dreamy, intoxicating atmosphere, accompanied by the ethereal music of Erik Satie.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Girl, The (1968)

  • Meszaros, Marta
  • 1968, Hungary, Marta Meszaros

While rather light on story, there’s a refreshing, liberating quality to Meszaros’ feature debut about a young Hungarian woman’s search for romantic and psychological fulfilment.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Fando and Lis (1968)

  • Jodorowsky, Alejandro
  • 1968, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Mexico

Jodorowsky’s notorious debut feature seems to show us a burgeoning surrealist-visualist already fully-formed, but one couldn’t care any less for his meandering storytelling or impenetrable characters.

⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

Memories of Underdevelopment (1968)

  • Criterion Collection
  • 1968, Cuba, Tomas Gutierrez Alea

Alea’s groundbreaking Cuban film may not be powerfully visceral, but its radical ‘docu-fiction’ style does encourage deep contemplation of the personal in relation to the political.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

More psychological drama than pure horror, Polanski’s classic will haunt viewers willing to be immersed in its reality.

Kuroneko (1968)

  • Criterion Collection, Others

A black-and-white samurai-cum-ghost movie with a thin storyline but effective in its consistent capture of an eerie if alluring visual tone.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
