Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)

  • Scott, Ridley
  • 2014, Ridley Scott, UK, USA

As a swords-and-sandals biblical epic, it is fairly spectacular, but remotely engaging.

Terminal, The (2004)

  • Spielberg, Steven
  • 2004, Steven Spielberg, USA

This may be minor Spielberg, but its wholeheartedness makes it worth the trip to the JFK airport in New York where an Eastern European man is stuck without citizenship, played with earnest charm by Tom Hanks.

Solaris (2002)

  • Soderbergh, Steven
  • 2002, Steven Soderbergh, USA

Soderberghโ€™s take pales in comparison to Tarkovskyโ€™s superior 1972 adaptationโ€”it feels too cold and lacklustre overall though it does grow more inwardly emotional by its final act.ย  ย ย ย

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

  • Criterion Collection, Kubrick, Stanley
  • 1964, Stanley Kubrick, UK, USA

Kubrickโ€™s pitch-black Cold War comedy is absolute gold, intelligently poking fun at the sheer absurdity of nuclear war and rhetoric.ย

Counselor, The (2013)

A didactic and dialogue-heavy thriller that is directed with confidence by Ridley Scott.ย

Prometheus (2012)

  • Scott, Ridley
  • 2012, Ridley Scott, USA

Ridley Scott sets expectations too high in this generally solid sci-fi epic let down by an unfocused screenplay and suspect pacing.

Zodiac (2007)

  • Fincher, David
  • 2007, David Fincher, USA

Hard to deny that this is Fincherโ€™s magnum opusโ€”this extraordinary crime procedural based on the unsolved Zodiac killings of the late 1960s is surely one of the most chillingly suspenseful films from the 2000s decade.

Bottle Rocket (1996)

  • Anderson, Wes, Criterion Collection
  • 1996, USA, Wes Anderson

Wes Andersonโ€™s debut feature is so underrated itโ€™s actually one of his bestโ€”a raw, humorous and amiable journey with a trio of young men hoping to pull off robberies for a living.

A “Gladiator-ised” Robin Hood without the right punch in this missed opportunity by Ridley Scott.

Shakespeare meets independent cinema of the highest order in Wellesโ€™ brilliant and vital take on the tragic story of the Moor of Venice.ย
