Black Book (2006)

  • Verhoeven, Paul
  • 2006, Germany, Netherlands, Paul Verhoeven
  • 1 Comment

This WWII thriller is a return to form for Verhoeven after his hit-and-miss Hollywood journey, featuring an exceptional performance by Carice van Houten as a Jewish singer who attempts to infiltrate the Gestapo in Nazi-occupied Netherlands.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Inland Empire (2006)

  • Criterion Collection, Lynch, David
  • 2006, David Lynch, USA

Spectral, hallucinatory images abound as Lynch boldly and abstractly experiments with digital video in what could be his most nightmarish and impenetrable odyssey into the dark recesses of the mind since 1977’s Eraserhead.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Tales from Earthsea (2006)

  • Others
  • 2006, Goro Miyazaki, Japan, Studio Ghibli
  • Leave a comment

Arguably Studio Ghibli’s weakest film, Goro Miyazaki’s debut feature is poorly-paced with a story that doesn’t sparkle, despite the beautiful, otherworldly visuals.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

Old Joy (2006)

  • Criterion Collection, Reichardt, Kelly
  • 2006, Kelly Reichardt, USA

It’s so simple—two men go on an impromptu camping trip—yet Reichardt’s cinema of healing is deeply insightful about the ephemeral nature of life and friendship.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Miami Vice (2006)

  • Mann, Michael
  • 2006, Michael Mann, USA

Mann’s slick, underappreciated cool fever dream about undercover agents infiltrating a drug trafficking ring is more intelligent and impressionistic a work than any Hollywood studio would dare to admit.

Still Life (2006)

  • Jia, Zhangke
  • 2006, China, Jia Zhangke

A stunning work of geographical and existential malaise and one of Jia Zhangke’s finest docu-fictive accomplishments, gorgeously shot along the Yangtze River in Fengjie County as a man and a woman separately search for their estranged spouse amid the human impact of the Three Gorges Dam’s construction.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone (2006)

  • Tsai, Ming-liang
  • 2006, Malaysia, Taiwan, Tsai, Ming-liang
  • 1 Comment

Shot in Kuala Lumpur, Tsai’s elliptical style captures the odd beauty of old places that seem devoid of warmth as his array of listless characters try to seek for that elusive intimacy and connection with another human being.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Mission: Impossible III (2006)

A tad cliche in its storytelling, but it remains a respectable action film by a promising director.
