Unfairly derided, Mann’s work here might not have come close to his best, but it’s still an intriguing 21st-century cyber-thriller set largely in Asia that deals with themes of geopolitics, technological fears, and agency versus anonymity in the digital world.
Generally solid if slightly overlong Muhammad Ali biopic with an underrated performance from Will Smith—it doesn’t push the envelope for the boxing genre, but Mann delivers the fundamentals right.
Mann’s slick, underappreciated cool fever dream about undercover agents infiltrating a drug trafficking ring is more intelligent and impressionistic a work than any Hollywood studio would dare to admit.
