Blood Diamond (2006)

  • Others
  • 2006, Edward Zwick, USA

Generally entertaining political actioner about diamond smuggling in Sierra Leone, though it rarely escapes Hollywood’s fetishised view of a bloodshed-laden Africa.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Breadwinner, The (2017)

  • Others
  • 2017, Canada, Ireland, Nora Twomey

A girl is forced to dress like a boy in Taliban-occupied Afghanistan to help her family make ends meet in this splendidly animated tale that perhaps relies too much on a parallel account of a mythical fantasy to work.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Using familiar genre tropes to tackle provocative themes, this shot-in-Istanbul, Cairo-set Cannes Best Screenplay winner asks hard questions about the troubling intersections between political and religious institutions.

Chloe (2009)

  • Others
  • 2009, Atom Egoyan, Canada, USA

Julianne Moore and Amanda Seyfried do heat up the screen in this erotic drama about the fears of infidelity, but the mind games under Egoyan’s slick direction don’t always work deeply or satisfyingly.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Hit the Road (2021)

  • Others
  • 2021, Iran

Tonally uneven and tries too hard to be captivating, Panah Panahi’s tragicomic debut feature is a mixed bag of a road movie, despite the picturesque cinematography and some genuine moments of human empathy.

⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Nanook of the North (1922)

  • Others
  • 1922, Documentary, Robert Flaherty, USA
  • Leave a comment

Purportedly the first-ever documentary made (or more accurately, staged) in the history of the medium, Flaherty’s eye-opening and intimate look at an Inuit family living in a harsh and cold environment poses age-old questions of authenticity and truth.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Trou, Le (1960)

  • Others
  • 1960, France, Jacques Becker

Becker’s swansong is one of the most underrated based-on-a-true-story prison escape movies in world cinema—its simple, efficient storytelling style hides a highly-detailed narrative that propels the story forwards through plot and action.
