It gets dull after a while, but the contextโ€”a Soviet fabricated show trial ordered by Stalin to frame and prosecute โ€˜anti-communistsโ€™ in the eyes of the publicโ€”is still an eye-opening look at character assassination on a national, ideological level, nearly a century ago.

Despite not having a strong central focus and being rather all over the placeโ€”quite literally so as it covers volcanoes around the worldโ€”Herzogโ€™s documentary remains eye-opening and culturally illuminating as it explores the myths and cults surrounding these fiery beasts of nature.

24 City (2008)

Thereโ€™s something very deeply moving and universal about Jiaโ€™s seemingly mundane documentary about the stories of workers (and their children) who used to ply their trade in a Chengdu factory that had made way for new commercial development as China rapidly modernised in the 2000s.
