I have a strange relationship with Spirited Away. The first time I watched it, I absolutely loved it. Then I watched it a couple more times with different people, and it was just okay. The last time I saw it was in the cinema. I don’t know if it was because I already knew the story so well and the element of surprise was gone, but I was bored out of my mind and swore never to watch it again. That said, I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
You also mentioned Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies. I love that movie. I think I lost interest in Miyazaki because his work became too mainstream or over-discussed, which tends to have a negative effect on me.

I get what you mean. I have the same issue with Roberto Benigni’s Life Is Beautiful. Such a great film. But when I watched it the second time, I didn’t find it interesting anymore.
