Sign of Leo, The (1962)

  • 1962, Eric Rohmer, France

Rohmerโ€™s first feature might not have been as lauded as his counterpartsโ€™ more groundbreaking works, but its exploration of luck (or lack thereof) through one manโ€™s misery was arguably the closest a French New Wave film had been to acknowledging its neorealist influences.

Lust and personal resolve collide in Rohmerโ€™s first feature in colour, lensed with warmth and sensuality by Days of Heavenโ€™s Nestor Almendros.

Boyfriends and Girlfriends (1987)

The last of Rohmerโ€™s โ€˜Comedies & Proverbsโ€™ series is a gratifying watch on what it means to fall in loveโ€”or break upโ€”with friends and lovers.

Green Ray, The (1986)

  • Rohmer, Eric

Probably the finest of Rohmerโ€™s โ€˜Comedies & Proverbsโ€™ seriesโ€”a sublime, psychologically rich work about the emotional struggles to be open to romantic relationships yet it is also about being free and finding thyself.

A young woman tests the limits of her romantic relationship by concurrently experimenting with being โ€˜singleโ€™ in one of Rohmerโ€™s bleaker offerings on the existential nature of love.

Pauline at the Beach (1983)

  • Rohmer, Eric
  • 1983, Eric Rohmer, France

Rohmer plays an elaborate, frolicky game of relationship misunderstandings and coverups in his third โ€˜Comedies & Proverbsโ€™ series, as most of the characters try to make senseโ€”with sheer incompetenceโ€”what the meaning of love is.

Good Marriage, A (1982)

  • Rohmer, Eric
  • 1982, Eric Rohmer, France

Rohmerโ€™s second โ€˜Comedies & Proverbsโ€™ film is one of his more straightforward affairs as it dissects with nuance why some people are obsessed with marriage, while others are simply disinterested.

The filmโ€™s unconventional narrative structure and free-flowing dialogue stand out as Rohmer effortlessly delivers a relationship-spying story in the guise of a romantic comedy.

Summer’s Tale, A (1996)

  • Rohmer, Eric

The romantic complications of a young man and three women are laid bare in this naturalistic and minimalist entry from Rohmerโ€™s โ€˜Tale of the Four Seasonsโ€™ series.
