Sign of Leo, The (1962)

  • Rohmer, Eric
  • 1962, Eric Rohmer, France

Rohmerโ€™s first feature might not have been as lauded as his counterpartsโ€™ more groundbreaking works, but its exploration of luck (or lack thereof) through one manโ€™s misery was arguably the closest a French New Wave film had been to acknowledging its neorealist influences.

Lolita (1962)

  • Kubrick, Stanley
  • 1962, Stanley Kubrick, UK, USA

With incredible restraint and backed by all-round excellent performances, Kubrickโ€™s exploration into a revolting form of sexual obsession is remarkable for its implicit portrayal of an erotic relationship between a (step)father and his daughter.

Arguably David Leanโ€™s greatest accomplishment, this is one of the most spectacular biopics in the history of cinema.

A poetic war film, if there ever was one, about the loss of childhood innocence shot in a dreamy style by the legendary Tarkovsky.

Autumn Afternoon, An (1962)

Ozu’s final work is a near masterpiece, a meditation on marriage and ageing through the lens of a father-daughter relationship.

Vivre sa vie (1962)

  • Criterion Collection, Godard, Jean-Luc
  • 1962, France, Jean-Luc Godard

Twelve uneven vignettes form Godardโ€™s loosely-structured tale of a womanโ€™s descent into prostitution, made with the creative spirit of some of his best works.
