Ariel (1988)

  • Criterion Collection, Kaurismaki, Aki
  • 1988, Aki Kaurismaki, Finland

Dreary yet comforting and a brilliant example of how to tell a story with poetic economy, this is a near-perfect work by Kaurismaki about a miner who loses his job but inadvertently encounters a parking attendant whom he falls in love with in the drollest possible way.

Notte, La (1961)

  • Antonioni, Michelangelo, Criterion Collection
  • 1961, Italy, Michelangelo Antonioni

Words have little meaning but faces bear the truth in Antonioniโ€™s remarkable treatise on modern alienation and ennui as it follows a well-to-do couple facing a sinking marriage on an afternoon and night out.

Age of Innocence, The (1993)

  • Criterion Collection, Scorsese, Martin
  • 1993, Martin Scorsese, USA

Scorseseโ€™s criminally ignored work based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is exquisite and expressive, as the psychological violence of complicated romances and illicit affairs threaten to implode in the cloistered high society of New Yorkโ€™s โ€˜Gilded Ageโ€™.

Five Easy Pieces (1970)

  • Criterion Collection

The film that solidified Jack Nicholson as a leading star as this New Hollywood classic about alienation follows an empty shell of a man who decides to visit his estranged ailing father while trapped in a loveless relationship with his girlfriend.

Last Picture Show, The (1971)

  • Bogdanovich, Peter, Criterion Collection
  • 1971, Peter Bogdanovich, USA

Bogdanovichโ€™s best-known work and one of New Hollywoodโ€™s most elegiac films, this is a deeply felt early โ€˜50s portrait of a dusty old Texan town fading away along with its downtrodden characters.

Japon (2002)

  • Criterion Collection
  • 2002, Mexico

The Mexican auteurโ€™s debut feels like the work of a veteran, a tour de force exploration of mortality and desires as nature, sexuality and the spiritual commingle in a tale about a man hoping to commit suicide in a remote canyon.

Fรฅrรถ Document (1970)

  • Bergman, Ingmar, Criterion Collection
  • 1970, Documentary, Ingmar Bergman, Sweden

Bergmanโ€™s first documentary provides a rather brief but still insightful look at the residents (farmer, schoolteacher, newly married couple, and more) of the isolated Fรฅrรถ Island, poetically shot by longtime collaborator Sven Nykvist.

Videodrome (1983)

  • Criterion Collection, Cronenberg, David
  • 1983, Canada, David Cronenberg

A sci-fi body horror movie that stands out in Cronenbergโ€™s โ€˜80s oeuvre for its special effects and just-as-relevant-today commentary on our obsession with the screen.

Wanda (1970)

Sporadically engaging despite the palpable sense of veritรฉ-style American indie filmmaking as a newly divorced woman finds herself stranded and exploited by men in this sole feature by Barbara Loden.

Europa (1991)

  • Criterion Collection, von Trier, Lars
  • 1991, Denmark, Lars von Trier

A stylish, aesthetic tour de force, particularly in the use of rear projection techniques, this noir-ish melodrama about an American train conductor in 1945 Germany tells of the precarious postwar atmosphere of remnant Nazism.
