Goodbye, South, Goodbye (1996)

  • Hou, Hsiao-Hsien
  • 1996, Hou, Hsiao-Hsien, Taiwan

A lesser-known Hou film, but not any less brilliant – this is a gritty, uncompromising look at small-time crime in the backwaters of Taipei.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Flowers of Shanghai (1998)

  • Criterion Collection, Hou, Hsiao-Hsien
  • 1998, Hou, Hsiao-Hsien, Taiwan

Like “The Assassin”, this is one of Hou’s most formally exquisite works – a gorgeous and sensuous take on the period costume drama.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Millennium Mambo (2001)

  • Hou, Hsiao-Hsien
  • 2001, Hou, Hsiao-Hsien, Taiwan

One of Hou’s most stylish films that continues with his obsession with depicting ennui and alienation among youth, with Shu Qi giving a superb performance.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Cafe Lumiere (2003)

  • Hou, Hsiao-Hsien
  • 2003, Hou, Hsiao-Hsien, Japan, Taiwan
  • 3 Comments

On hindsight a homage to Ozu by proxy of Kore-eda, this is a subtle if plotless drama that continues Hou’s fascination with trains.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Three Times (2005)

  • Hou, Hsiao-Hsien
  • 2005, Hou, Hsiao-Hsien, Taiwan

An unexpectedly weaker effort from Hou —this is a well-intentioned experimental exercise in form, style and structure, but it comes off as uneven and unsatisfactory.

⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Flight of the Red Balloon (2007)

  • Hou, Hsiao-Hsien
  • 2007, France, Hou, Hsiao-Hsien, Taiwan

Shot in France and starring Juliette Binoche in an excellent performance, this is however a minor work by Hou that doesn’t quite achieve anything substantial.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Assassin, The (2015)

  • Hou, Hsiao-Hsien
  • 2015, China, Hou, Hsiao-Hsien, Taiwan
  • 5 Comments

Hou’s latest may be extremely slow and loosely structured, but its sheer beauty and assured direction will bring you deep into a world of strangely alluring characters, dilemmatic codes of honour and astonishing landscapes.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
