Raise the Red Lantern (1991)

  • Zhang, Yimou
  • 1991, China

Arguably Zhang’s masterpiece, this plays out like an opera, at times ceremonial, at times tragic, but always tense and captivating.

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse (1991)

  • Others
  • 1991, Documentary, USA

One of the greatest documentaries about the making of a movie everโ€”and of ‘Apocalypse Now‘ no less.

Once a Thief (1991)

  • Woo, John
  • 1991, Hong Kong, John Woo

John Woo goes into light-hearted (but still heroic bloodshed) mode in this rather pretentious heist-comedy with jarring tonal shifts.ย

Night on Earth (1991)

  • Criterion Collection, Jarmusch, Jim
  • 1991, Jim Jarmusch, USA

Five uneven vignettes shot in different cities centering on conversations between cab drivers and passengersโ€”this is Jarmusch in easy-going mode as he captures the pathos of human connection.

Barton Fink (1991)

  • Coen, Joel & Ethan
  • 1991, Joel & Ethan Coen, USA

One of the Coens’ very best – a fine character study and a strong allegory of what is rotten about Hollywood filmmaking.

Double Life of Veronique, The (1991)

  • Criterion Collection, Kieslowski, Krzysztof
  • 1991, France, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Poland
  • Leave a comment

A metaphysical treatment of the โ€˜doppelgangerโ€™ story, Kieslowskiโ€™s brilliant work is both ravishing and mysterious, and features an incredibly mesmerising performance by Irene Jacobs.
