Hole, The (1998)

  • Tsai, Ming-liang
  • 1998, Taiwan, Tsai, Ming-liang

An exceptional if bleak drama with musical interludes, Tsaiโ€™s prescient work explores a virus epidemic and severe climate change hitting Taiwanโ€”his style is still unmistakable and, best of all, he finds new levels of miserabilist humour.

Days (2020)

A docu-fiction that may not be as fully-formed as Tsaiโ€™s previous films, but still feels somewhat rewarding if you surrender to its modulated slow cinema style.

I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone (2006)

  • Tsai, Ming-liang
  • 2006, Malaysia, Taiwan, Tsai, Ming-liang

Shot in Kuala Lumpur, Tsaiโ€™s elliptical style captures the odd beauty of old places that seem devoid of warmth as his array of listless characters try to seek for that elusive intimacy and connection with another human being.

Stray Dogs (2013)

Frustratingly deliberate in its pacing, yet one draws contemplation from the filmโ€™s unique stillness, all from one of the most formidable artists of โ€˜slow cinemaโ€™ of our time.

Goodbye, Dragon Inn (2003)

An elegy to the demise ofย the โ€˜cinemaโ€™โ€”both films and spacesโ€”of the 20thย century as we had experienced it, all to the pedestrian if oddly haunting pacing of Tsaiโ€™s delicate craft. ย

River, The (1997)

Tsai solidifies his oblique, slow-paced style with this odd, and at times, shocking meditation on the incommunicability of humans through a family of loners.

Vive L’Amour (1994)

  • 1994, Taiwan, Tsai, Ming-liang

Tsaiโ€™s Venice Golden Lion-winning second feature may be sparse and silent, but it remains to be one of the deepest portrayals of existential loneliness in the directorโ€™s singular filmography.

Rebels of the Neon God (1992)

Still one of Tsaiโ€™s very best, this is a solid feature debut that grapples with the ennui of โ€˜90s youth listlessness with stylistic aplomb.
