Death by Hanging (1968)

  • Criterion Collection, Oshima, Nagisa
  • 1968, Japan, Nagisa Oshima

A Korean man is hanged but doesnโ€™t die in Oshimaโ€™s complex if puzzling political farce, built out of layers of thematic juxtapositions and performative gestures, as the ghastly spectre of Japanese imperialism and social injustices rear their ugly heads.

Man Who Left His Will on Film, The (1970)

  • Oshima, Nagisa
  • 1970, Japan, Nagisa Oshima

Oshima confidently mixes eroticism with the supernatural in this beautifully-shot murder-cum-ghost tale that is rich in old-world atmosphere.

In the Realm of the Senses (1976)

  • Criterion Collection, Oshima, Nagisa
  • 1976, Japan, Nagisa Oshima

One of the most notorious films in the history of cinemaโ€”its explicit, unsimulated depiction of sex hides a troubling exploration of social alienation.
